Wolf Pack Fall to P-Bruins in Shootout

By Bob Crawford
Director of Broadcasting & Public Relations
Hartford Wolf Pack

The 'Pack had their streak of 10-straight shootout wins end with a 2-1
shootout loss on Sunday against the Providence Bruins in Providence.
Providence – A Hartford Wolf Pack streak of 10 straight wins in shootouts came to an end Sunday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Providence Bruins. It was the first Wolf Pack shootout defeat since March 21, 2015, a 2-1 loss at Springfield. Bruin rookie Peter Cehlarik scored the only goal of the shootout, after the Wolf Pack’s Matt Carey and Providence’s Anton Blidh had traded goals in the first period. Zane McIntyre made 31 saves in the Bruin net, and went 3-for-3 in shootout, while Magnus Hellberg had 40 saves for the Wolf Pack.

“It was a big [standings] point,” said Hellberg. “Everybody battled hard. We’ve lost a lot of bodies, some guys got called up and some are injured, but I think the guys that are still here stepped up and did their part.

“Providence is a really good team, so we know it’s always going to be a battle when we play them,” continued the Hartford netminder. “It would have been nice to get the extra point, but one is better than nothing.”

Playing a third straight game without their top two scorers, Marek Hrivik and Nicklas Jensen, both of whom are on recall to the parent New York Rangers, the Wolf Pack took a 1-0 lead at 6:04 of the first period on what would be their only shot in the first 11:54 of the game.

Carey blocked a Matt Bartkowski shot from the left point in the Wolf Pack zone, and was able to get free in the Bruin zone and put a forehand bid past the stick side of McIntyre.

The Bruins equalized at 13:26, after a Wolf Pack breakout pass missed connections. A Mat Bodie feed went into the skates of Justin Fontaine, and Colby Cave and Wayne Simpson were able to set Blidh up from about 30 feet out. Blidh’s hard shot beat Hellberg on his stick side.

That would be it for the offense for the day, though, with the rest of regulation and the 3-on-3 overtime failing to yield any more goals.

Cehlarik led off the shootout for Providence, and, despite nearly losing the puck, was able to beat Hellberg with a snap shot past his blocker. Hellberg would go on to deny Jordan Szwarz and Colton Hargrove, but McIntyre was perfect against Michael Joly, Fontaine and Adam Tambellini.

PACK RECALL OKSANENE

The Hartford Wolf Pack today announced that that Ahti Oksanen has been recalled from the team’s ECHL affiliate, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

A 6-3, 215-pound rookie out of Boston University, Oksanen has skated in 19 games with the Swamp Rabbits, scoring six goals and adding five assists for 11 points. The Kirkkonummi, Finland native leads Swamp Rabbit rookies in points and goals, and is tied for third overall on the team in goals and ranked fifth in points. The 23-year-old forward, who signed an AHL contract with the Wolf Pack June 14, had totals of 51 goals and 64 assists for 115 points, along with 66 penalty minutes, in 150 career games with Boston University.

WOLF PACK WEEK

The Wolf Pack (7-13-3-1, 18 pts., .375) were 0-2-0-1 in three games this past week.
In an Atlantic Division tilt Wednesday at the XL Center, rookies John Gilmour and Michael Joly scored goals. Joly’s was his first career AHL tally, but the Wolf Pack ended up on the short end of a 4-2 score vs. the Springfield Thunderbirds.

The Toronto Marlies came to town on Saturday night, for the third meeting in eight days between themselves and the Wolf Pack, and a four-goal second period carried Toronto to victory, 5-3. Joly scored for a second straight game in that contest.

On Sunday in Providence, a Wolf Pack streak of ten consecutive wins in shootouts came to an end, as the Bruins came away with a 2-1 shootout triumph. Magnus Hellberg made a team season-high 40 saves in that game.

Buckeyes Outlast Huskies, 64-60

TOP GUNS: UConn’s Jalen Adams and Ohio State’s Trevor Thompson battle
for a rebound in the first half of Saturday night’s game. The Buckeyes
defeated the Huskies, 64-60.

By Bob Phillips

After defeating Syracuse on Monday at Madison Square Garden, the University of Connecticut Huskies were hopeful of following that success with another win over a big-time program. But on Saturday, while the effort was there, the results came up just short. And while the game proved to be a back-and-forth affair through most of the contest, despite a game-high 19 points from Jalen Adams, a career night from Ohio State sixth man Trevor Thompson (17 points, 17 rebounds) and a 21-point advantage from the foul line spelled the difference as the Buckeyes came away with a 64-60 victory before 12,313 fans at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The Huskies, who fell to 4-5, were depleted from the get-go with freshman Juwan Durham (flu) not even making the trip to the heartland, and both UConn big men, Amida Brimah and Kentan Facey, picking up their fourth fouls midway through the second period. That allowed Ohio State, which was hell-bent on getting a “W” after losing to lowly Florida Atlantic in OT in their last outing, to attack the paint relentlessly, which translated into numer
ous trips to the charity stripe. And the Buckeyes made good on the Huskies’ generosity, knocking down 26 of the 34 opportunities they were handed from the foul line.

Adams banged in a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Huskies into the locker room with a 34-32 lead at intermission. They came out strong in the second half, building an eight-point cushion—42-34—in the opening three and a-half minutes of the second half. But then, it all started to unravel, thanks largely to 16 UConn turnovers.

“We've got to make the plays when it counts,” said Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie after the game. “We got two turnovers when we got the game tied with three minutes to go. Just careless turnovers. We've got to take care of the ball.”

That UConn committed 27 fouls to Ohio State’s 12, which sent the Buckeyes to the line 34 times compared to the Huskies’ nine, was also another huge contributing factor to the ultimate four-point margin of victory for the Buckeyes.

“We've just got to get better at staying out of foul trouble," said Brimah (8 points, 6 boards in just 18 minutes on the floor). “We had a short team, but we can't use that as an excuse. We've got to do a better job leading when we get in situations like this.”

The Huskies will try to right the ship and pull back to .500 when they take on North Florida on Sunday at Gampel Pavilion. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be televised live on SNY.
