Sound Tigers Split Two Over Weekend

Matt Lorito splits two defenders in the Sound Tigers’ 5-2 loss
to the Bears on Sunday in Hershey, PA.
BRIDGEPORT—The Bridgeport Sound Tigers were on the road this weekend, and achieved a split
in contests with the Utica Comets and the Hershey Bears. First up was a trip to upstate New York to take on the Comets where the Sound Tigers came away with a 4-3 victory in a game played before 3,935 fans at the Adirondack Bank Center on Friday night.

Bridgeport took control early with three goals in the opening period to set the tone. St. Denis capitalized at the 10:21 mark when he skated to the doorstep and finished Nick Schilkey’s centering feed from behind the goal line. His fourth tally of the season came on the power play following Utica’s bench minor for too many men on the ice. With an assist, Schilkey extended his scoring streak to four games (3g, 1a) and set up Bridgeport’s first goal on the man advantage since Nov. 23.

Stevens made it 2-0 nearly four minutes later with his first goal since Nov. 24 and his second of the year. Colin McDonald directed the puck above the right circle, where Kyle Burroughs sent a shot towards the net that Stevens deflected in front at 14:40. McDonald is now on a five-game scoring streak (5a), tied for the team’s longest this year.

Less than two minutes later, Stevens added another one shorthanded – the Sound Tigers’ first shorthanded goal of the season. He stole the puck in the neutral zone and darted straight at Zane McIntyre before sliding a backhand shot under the goalie’s pads at 16:40.

Utica got one back at the 18:24 mark courtesy of Reid Boucher’s league-leading 19th goal, which also extended his scoring streak to nine games. Brogan Rafferty sprung Sven Baertschi down the right wing and the latter sent a backhand pass, cross ice, to Boucher at the left post. The sixth-year forward raced towards the feed and buried a one-timer past Jared Coreau’s blocker to make it 3-1.

The Sound Tigers were outshot 10-7 in the second period, but netted the only goal of the frame when Kiefer Bellows muscled his way to the crease and finished a miraculous effort. After finishing up a holding minor, Sebastian Aho emerged from the box and bumped a pass to Bellows, who moved down the right wing and cut towards the crease. He lowered his shoulder and forced a lane before pushing a forehand shot in while flying through the air. It was Bellows’ sixth goal of the season, good for second-most on the club.

The Comets made things stressful with two power-play goals in the third period to pull within one. Jonah Gadjovich snapped home a perfectly-placed shot above Coreau’s reaching glove at the 7:39 mark, in the dying seconds of Bellows’ penalty for cross-checking. It’s the 14th straight game that the Comets have scored a power-play goal.

Carter Camper made it 4-3 in the final three minutes with another goal on the man advantage. He skated down the right wing and sniped a shot from a sharp angle for his third of the season. However, the Comets couldn’t pull back even despite bringing McIntyre to the bench for an extra attacker. Stevens nearly completed a hat trick after a takeaway in the neutral zone, but his shot hit the outside of the net.

The Sound Tigers finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Coreau (3-7-1) had 31 saves on 34 shots, while McIntyre made 19 stops. For Bellows, who netted what would become the game-winner, it was his fifth goal in his last seven outings. And St. Denis’s power play goal in the first period snapped an 0-for-32 stretch for the Sound Tigers with a man advantage. Utica outshot Bridgeport 34-23.
The win moved the Sound Tigers to 2-1-0-0 against the Comets this season and ended Bridgeport’s three-game winless in regulation slide overall.

THE SKINNY

Next, the Sound Tigers headed to the Keystone State to challenge the Hershey Bears where Bridgeport dropped a 5-2 decision before 6,754 fans at Giant Center on Saturday evening.
Hershey’s Brian Pinho, skating in his 100th pro game, opened the scoring just 1:49 into the first period with his fourth goal of the year. He charged ahead and completed a give-and-go with Axel Jonsson-Fjallby down the left wing before deflecting the return pass from the doorstep behind goaltender Jakub Skarek.

Bellows answered with his sixth goal in eight games at the 7:48 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Bellows stickhandled below the Bears’ goal line and sent a pass to the crease, where it redirected off of a Hershey defenseman who was battling in front with Colin McDonald. Kyle Burroughs and Kubiak each earned a helper. It was the third straight game in which Bellows has scored. It was also the 100th professional contest for Bellows, son of former NHL star Brian Bellows.

Mike Sgarbossa, the Bears’ leading scorer, received a fortunate bounce at 11:44 to put Hershey back on top with his 10th goal of the campaign. Sgarbossa entered the Sound Tigers’ zone and attempted to set up Garrett Pilon on the right side, but his pass redirected off of Seth Helgeson’s reaching stick and made its way past Skarek.

Just 54 seconds later, Philippe Maillet bumped the Bears’ lead up to 3-1 with a point-blank shot in front of Skarek. Liam O’Brien gained possession behind the goal line, took it to the side of Bridgeport’s net and guided a pass to Maillet for a one-time goal. It was Maillet’s fourth of the season at 12:38.

Ladd kept the Sound Tigers close with his fifth goal of the season just 86 seconds into the second period. Kubiak set up Parker Wotherspoon at the left point where he quickly filtered a shot to the net that Ladd deflected in.

However, the Bears ended the frame with two goals 14 seconds apart to pull ahead 5-2. Former Islander Matt Moulson registered a power-play goal at the 5:59 mark, cleaning up Sgarbossa’s initial shot that hit the back of Helgeson, before O’Brien’s sixth of the year came shortly after.

The Sound Tigers had five power-play opportunities in the third period, including a couple of lengthy 5-on-3 chances, but couldn’t solve goaltender Vitek Vanecek again. In fact, Bridgeport outshot Hershey 21-8 in the final two periods.

The Sound Tigers finished the evening 0-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the kill. Bridgeport outshot Hershey 26-18. The loss dropped Bridgeport to 1-1-0-0 against Hershey this season.

Wolf Pack Split Weekend Set With Phantoms

The Hartford Wolf Pack dropped a 4-2 decision to the Lehigh Valley
Valley Phantoms on Saturday in Allentown, Pa., after winning vs. the
Phantoms on Friday night in Hartford.
ALLENTOWN, PA—A five-game Hartford Wolf Pack win streak came to an end Saturday night as the Wolf Pack were bested 4-2 by the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before 8443 fans at the PPL Center in the second half of a home-and-home series. On “Teddy Bear Toss” night, the home team brought the toys out only 1:22 into the contest, after having been shut out by the Wolf Pack, 4-0, the previous night in Hartford.

Lehigh Valley’s first shot of the game came from the left point, off the stick of former Wolf Pack defenseman Chris Bigras.  It went through a screen set by Isaac Ratcliffe and eluded Hartford goaltender Adam Huska (29 saves).

The Wolf Pack power play had a golden opportunity to tie the score, when both Andy Andreoff (holding) and Greg Carey (slashing) of the Phantoms received minor penalties at 6:56, giving Hartford a full two minutes of two-man advantage. Hartford was unable to capitalize on that, however, and the Phantoms made it a 2-0 lead at 15:57 with a shorthanded goal, after Maksim Sushko was called for tripping at 14:08. Tyler Wotherspoon sent German Rubtsov and Nicolas Aube-Kubel away on a 2-on-1, and Rubtsov fed the puck from the left side across to Aube-Kubel, who made a move to the backhand to beat Huska.

After a scoreless second period, Ryan Gropp, playing in just his third AHL game of the season, got the Wolf Pack on the scoreboard 2:22 into the third. Boo Nieves sent a breakout pass out of the Hartford zone to Tim Gettinger in center ice, and he handed off to Gropp on the right side.  Gropp cut towards the net in the Phantom end and put a backhand shot up under the crossbar behind Lehigh Valley netminder J.F. Berube (26 saves). Gerry Fitzgerald restored the two-goal margin, though, at 11:38, with a one-timer from the top of the left-wing circle off of a pass from Reece Willcox.

The Wolf Pack climbed to within one again on a power play at 16:36, as Vinni Lettieri became the first Hartford player to hit double digits in goals with his 10th of the season. With Nate Prosser off for hooking, Joey Keane moved the puck from the middle of the blue line to Danny O’Regan in the right circle. He threaded a feed to Lettieri just below the left faceoff dot, and he ripped a quick shot into the net.

The Wolf Pack pulled Huska for an extra attacker with 2:00 left, but Sushko foiled that strategy with an empty-net goal at 18:24. Berube stopped the puck behind the net for Wotherspoon, and he passed to the left side to Sushko, who took a couple of steps before lifting the puck all the way down into the vacated cage. It was the first regulation loss in eight games for the Wolf Pack, who had been 5-0-2-0 in their previous seven and were playing their sixth game in nine days.

The Wolf Pack continue a stretch of three straight road games this Tuesday night, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m., playing the first of back-to-back games in Charlotte, NC against the defending Calder Cup-champion Charlotte Checkers. The next home outing for the Wolf Pack is their last action before Christmas, a battle with the Providence Bruins Saturday, Dec. 21. That game also faces off at 7:00.

Four Third Period Goals Sink Sound Tigers

The Sound Tigers’ Colin McDonald (13) extended his points
streak to four games vs. Utica on Monday night.

BRIDGEPORT—The Utica Comets, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks scored four third-period goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 6-3, before 1,530 fans at Webster Bank Arena on Monday night. Former Quinnipiac star Brogan Rafferty paced the Comets with a four-point night (1 goal, 3 assists), while Kieffer Bellows, Nick Schilkey and Jeff Kubiak all scored for the Sound Tigers.

Justin Bailey put Utica on top at 11:16 of the first period with his ninth goal of the year, which extended his goal-scoring streak to five games – the longest current stretch in the AHL. It also came on the power play with Bode Wilde in the box for tripping. The Comets took advantage when Sven Baertschi zipped a cross-ice pass to the back post for Bailey’s tap in to make it 1-0.

The Sound Tigers got an early response to begin the second period as Colin McDonald guided a pass to the crease for Bellows, who poked it home past Zane McIntyre. It was Bellows’ fourth goal in the last six games, while McDonald extended his point streak to four games at the 2:46 mark. Matt Lorito also notched an assist and improved his point streak to five games (3g, 2a).

Utica answered immediately with another power play opportunity, capitalizing just 46 seconds later with Kole Lind’s first of two goals on the night. Baertschi dropped the puck off for Reid Boucher and he sent it effortlessly from circle to circle where Lind connected on a one-timer to give Utica a one-goal lead at 3:32. It pushed Boucher’s point streak to a team-best seven games.

After a dangerous breakaway for Baertschi about five minutes later, Parker Wotherspoon sprung Ryan Bourque in stride the other way for a scoring chance that made it 2-2. Bourque dished the puck to Jeff Kubiak for a breakaway, beating McIntyre low for his second goal of the season.

With just 3:15 left in the middle frame, Schilkey extended his goal streak to three straight games to give Bridgeport its first lead. Otto Koivula found Schilkey in the right circle, where his wrist shot did not miss to make it 3-2. Tom Kuhnhackl also added an assist for his second point of his conditioning loan.

However, Utica handed the Sound Tigers their first loss when leading after two periods this season (6-1-0-0) by scoring four unanswered goals to win 6-3. Three of those goals came in a span of 2:03, including Nikolay Goldobin’s ninth of the year at 4:37. Lukas Jasek followed with his fifth of the season at 6:05 and Lind netted the Comets’ third power-play goal just 35 seconds later.

Rafferty put the exclamation point on the contest at 11:06 of the third period when he wacked home his third goal of the season from an impossible angle, directly along the extended goal line, assisted by Boucher and Jasek.

The Sound Tigers finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-6 on the penalty kill. Jared Coreau (2-7-1) made 27 saves on 33 shots, while McIntyre stopped 28 of 31. The game also included one fight when Koivula dropped the gloves with Guillaume Brisebois at 6:12 of the third period.

With the loss, Bridgeport fell to 9-14-3-1, while Utica improved to 14-9-1-2. It also snapped the Sound Tigers’ three-game home winning streak and dropped them to 1-1-0-0 against the Comets this season.

The Sound Tigers now embark on a two-game road trip this weekend, heading to upstate New York for a rematch with the Comets in Utica on Friday, then on to Hershey, Pa., for a hookup with the Hershey Bears.
