Travelers Championship Hosts Gamers vs Golfers Charity Streaming Event on Twitch

HARTFORD—The Travelers Championship will bring the worlds of PGA TOUR golf and video gaming together in an innovative Gamers versus Golfers fundraising initiative that will be streamed live on Twitch during tournament week.

Five PGA TOUR players—Max Homa, Joaquin Niemann, Carlos Ortiz, Harold Varner III and Matthew Wolff—are scheduled to compete against five professional gamers—BJPofficial, CohhCarnage, Crowder, daltoosh and Sydnee “sydsogood” Goodman. They’ll be playing PGA TOUR 2K21, which features the site of the Travelers Championship, TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

Fans can participate by following the gamers’ channels on Twitch, and can donate to the tournament’s primary beneficiary, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, by following prompts and instructions during the streams. Camp provides a traditional summer camp experience for seriously ill children at its facility in Ashford, Connecticut.

Each of the five professional gamers will be playing PGA TOUR 2K21 in two-hour blocks, spread out on Tuesday, June 22, and Wednesday, June 23. They will be joined for at least 30 minutes by a PGA TOUR player, pitting great golfers against top gamers:

• Tuesday, June 22 (all times ET):

o 2:30-4:30 p.m.: Crowder with Matthew Wolff from 4-4:30 p.m.

o 4:30-6:30 p.m.: daltoosh with Max Homa from 6-6:30 p.m.

o 6:30-8:30 p.m.: BJPofficial with Joaquin Niemann from 8-8:30 p.m.

All five of the participating players from the PGA TOUR have committed to play in this year’s Travelers Championship. They include:

Max Homa is a two-time PGA TOUR winner, including earlier this season at The Genesis Invitational. He has played in the Travelers Championship three times (2015, 2019, 2020) and is No. 40 in this week’s Official World Golf Ranking.

Joaquin Niemann became the first player from Chile to win on the PGA TOUR when he captured the A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier event in 2020. Niemann tied for fifth at the Travelers Championship in 2019, the same year he played in the Presidents Cup.

Carlos Ortiz earned his first PGA TOUR victory when he won the Vivint Houston Open in November. Ortiz will be making his fifth appearance in the Travelers Championship, and is No. 53 in this week’s Official World Golf Ranking.

Harold Varner III has 13 top-10 finishes in his PGA TOUR career, including a tie for second place in this season’s RBC Heritage. Varner has played in the Travelers Championship each of the past four years, with a tie for 21st in 2019 his best finish at TPC River Highlands.

Matthew Wolff made his PGA TOUR debut as a professional at the 2019 Travelers Championship. He won two starts later, at the 3M Open. Wolff finished second in 2020 at the U.S. Open and tied for fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship.

CT AHL Teams To Play 72-Game Schedule

BRIDGEPORT—The Amercan Hockey League announced today that a schedule unification plan has been adopted that will see all teams play a 72-game regular-season schedule beginning in 2022-23.

As part of the plan, for the 2021-22 season, all teams in the Atlantic, North and Central Divisions have the option of playing either 76 or 72 games, while teams in the Pacific Division will play 68 games.

Additionally, there will be an increase in the number of teams qualifying for the Calder Cup Playoffs each year; details will be finalized and announced later in the off-season.

The Bridgeport Islanders (formerly the Sound Tigers), Hartford Wolf Pack, and Providence Bruins will play 72-games in the 2021-22 regular season, while the Springfield Thunderbirds will play a 76-game slate.

“I am very pleased that we were able to achieve a schedule of 72 games for all teams in the American Hockey League,” AHL President and CEO Scott Howso said. “In coming together to create a plan that is fair and equitable, our owners have demonstrated a commitment to the long-term strength of the league.”

Sun Smack Liberty

UNCASVILLE—Led by a 31-point, 13-rebound performance by Jonquel Jones, the Connecticut Sun trounced the New York Liberty 85-64 at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday night. Brionna Jones added 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while DeWanna Bonner chipped in with 13 points for Connecticut.

The Sun led by five, 24-19, after the first quarter led by seven and six points from DeWanna Bonner and Jonquel Jones, respectively. But the Liberty came back to take the lead by opening the second period on a 16-9 tear, which included a 12-0 run.

But then it was the Sun's turn to tear it up as Jones, the Bahama native who renounced the citizenship of her native country in favor of Bosnia Herzegovina in order to play in the lucrative European Leagues, scored 10 points during a key 15-0 run to close the first half and early third quarter that gave the Connecticut a 52-37 lead. From that point, the Liberty, who were held to their lowest point total of the season, never got closer than nine points.

Early in the third quarter the Sun went on a 9-0 run and opened a 15-point lead, their biggest advantage of the contest. The Connecticut defense held New York to 12 points in the third, while the Sun put 19 on the board. The fourth quarter proved to be more of the same as Connecticut opened with an 8-0 run, extending their lead to 20 points, outscoring New York 23-15 in the final frame.

“We understood that they were going to play a ‘small ball’ lineup,” said Jones, the WNBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Month in May. “While it gives them some advantages offensively, we understood that defensively they were going to be really, really small.”

That goes a long way to explain Connecticut's dominance on the boards. The Sun out-rebounded the Liberty 38-22, including 14-3 off the offensive glass. Huge rebound numbers can be misleading, often driven by poor shooting. Such was not the case Saturday as Connecticut shot 43.7 percent from the floor.

“At the beginning of the game I tried to assert myself to get position [in the paint], but it wasn’t really working out,” continued JJ. “Getting on the offensive boards [helped]. The second quarter and the rest of the game we kind of settled in and I was able to get the catches and the touches that I wanted.”

Rebecca Allen led New York, which has lost three in a row, with 14 points. Betnijah Laney, who averaged a career-best 17.2 points and was named the WNBA most improved player last season, finished with eight points shooting 4-for-12 from the field. The 27-year-old small forward from Rutgers had scored at least 20 points in every game this season—her first with the Liberty after stints in Chicago, Indiana, Atlanta and with the Sun in 2018.

“We found our tempo and stayed true to what we thought would work and that was playing through the paint; playing through our size advantage,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “We slowed down, and we executed.” In addition to his team's dominance off the boards, the Sun had 22 second-chance points to the Liberty's 2, and outscored their opponents 44-18 in the paint.

With the win the first-place Sun improved to 8-2 while the sixth-ranked Liberty dropped their third straight game and fell to 5-4.

Next up for the Sun will be a match-up with Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and the Seattle Storm on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-off is 2 p.m. (ET) and the game will be streamed live on Facebook. The Libs will travel to Phoenix on Sunday to challenge Diana Taurasi and the Mercury. Game tips off at 6 p.m. (ET) and will be televised live on YES.

JJ To Compete in Euro Tourney

The Sun announced that superstar Jonquel Jones will be leaving the team compete in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina. The competition is being held in Strasbourg, France with a berth in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on the line. Jones will be temporarily suspended.

JJ will be absent for Connecticut’s four (4) games scheduled from June 13-22. Based on her team’s record in group play, Jones may potentially miss two additional games scheduled for June 27 and 29. The 6-6 forward leads the league in rebounding (10.4 rpg), ranks fifth in points per game (21.6) and is tied for third with Ariel Atkins for three pointers made with 23.

Sound Tigers No More

BRIDGEPORT—OK, now you can say it. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers was a really stupid name. And now it is a name that will fade into history.

A new era in professional Connecticut sports dawned today when the New York Islanders announced that their American Hockey League affiliate would now be known as the Bridgeport Islanders. Speculation as to the fate of the former Sound Tigers had run rampant, especially with the parent team moving to the brand spanking new UBS Arena in Elmont, NY—spitting distance from the Belmont racetrack. And that left the Isle's current home, the Nassau County Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, ripe for a winter tenant. The move sets up a potential ECHL team coming to Long Island.

The new Bridgeport Islanders logo features an iconic mark for the team’s future. The strong letter “B” recognizes the great city of Bridgeport. The stick which forms the letter “B” has the parent Islanders “NY” logo as the tape on the blade, a subtle nod to the affiliation between the two clubs. The iconic Islanders blue and orange colors remain the same.

“Having the Islanders name associated with Bridgeport, creates a stronger tie between the NHL team and the top development team,” Bridgeport general manager and New York Islanders assistant general manager Chris Lamoriello said. “Every time a player puts on the Bridgeport uniform, they’ll be putting on the identical uniform the NHL team wears, except for the new logo.”

Bridgeport and the New York Islanders hold the fifth-longest current AHL-NHL affiliation, dating back to Bridgeport’s inaugural season in 2001-02. The New York Islanders purchased the club on July 22, 2004.

“This renaming is just the first step in some exciting new initiatives happening within our organization,” Bridgeport team president of business operations Brent Rossi said. “As we continue to work closely with the New York Islanders, the City of Bridgeport and Oak View Group, we are eager to unveil more progress at Webster Bank Arena as the 2021-22 season approaches.”

BRIDGEPORT—The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders, defeated both of their Atlantic Division rivals this past week, scoring four goals in each victory and earning back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

The Sound Tigers (5-13-1-0) outscored the Hartford Wolf Pack (10-7-1-0) and Providence Bruins (14-5-1-0) by a combined 8-1 margin in their last two games, which began with a road contest at the XL Center on Saturday.

Ken Appleby (2-2-0) stopped all 22 shots he faced in a 4-0 win that afternoon, posting his 13th professional shutout and the first clean sheet for a Bridgeport netminder in 2020-21. Arnaud Durandeau (one goal, one assist) and Otto Koivula (two assists) each had a multi-point effort, while Dmytro Timashov, Robert Carpenter and Cole Bardreau also found the back of the net in the Sound Tigers’ biggest victory of the season. It ended Hartford’s seven-game winning streak.

Durandeau, Timashov and rookie defenseman Samuel Bolduc played a key role in another win on Tuesday, each recording a multi-point performance in a 4-1 victory against the Bruins at Webster Bank Arena. Bolduc scored twice including the game-winning goal at 3:49 of the first period, while Timashov (one goal, one assist) and Durandeau (two assists) stayed hot and Jakub Skarek (2-8-0) made 23 saves. Jeff Kubiak kicked off the scoring just 78 seconds into the contest with his first goal of the season in his 200th professional game.

The Sound Tigers remain third in the Atlantic Division, 10 points behind the second-place Wolf Pack, with five games remaining in the abbreviated season. Bridgeport fell to Hartford at home last Thursday, 4-2, despite Blade Jenkins’ first professional goal on a rebound from the right circle. Bardreau also scored and Appleby made 21 saves.

Milestone Men: Jeff Kubiak and Seth Helgeson each celebrated a professional milestone on Tuesday. Helgeson, the Sound Tigers’ captain, played his 500th pro game and his 450th in the AHL, split between Bridgeport and the Albany Devils. The 30-year-old defenseman has also played 50 NHL games with the New Jersey Devils (2014-17). Helgeson has three points (one goal, two assists) and a team-leading 34 penalty minutes in 19 games with Bridgeport this season. In addition, Kubiak scored a goal in his 200th pro game on Tuesday. He has played 138 AHL games with the Sound Tigers and 62 ECHL contests with the team's ECHL affiliate, the Worcester Railers. Kubiak has one goal and six assists in 18 games this year.

Bolduc Bolsters Bridgeport: Samuel Bolduc continues to turn heads in his first professional season. The 20-year-old rookie recorded his first career multi-goal game on Tuesday with a pair of tallies against Providence, including his first game-winner in the opening four minutes of the contest. In addition, Bolduc’s career-best plus-3 rating on Tuesday was the best rating for any Sound Tigers’ player this season (fellow defenseman Grant Hutton also had a plus-3 rating on Tuesday). Bolduc leads the Sound Tigers in points (12) and shots (43) and is tied for the team lead in assists (six) and games played (19). He is one of six players to appear in every game for Bridgeport this season.

Picking Up the Pace: Arnaud Durandeau had just one assist in his first six games of the season, but the 22-year-old winger posted his second straight two-point effort on Tuesday and now has multiple points in three of his last four outings. Durandeau leads the Sound Tigers in points-per-game (0.70) and has six points (two goals, four assists) in his last four. He’s tied for fifth on the team in scoring (seven points in 10 games) and has 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 31 AHL contests with Bridgeport over the last two seasons.

High Five: Kyle MacLean is on a career-best five-game point streak (one goal, four assists), which is the longest for any Bridgeport player this season. He also has one assist in each of his last four games, the longest assist streak for the team this year. MacLean is tied for fifth on the club in points (seven) and tied for sixth in assists (five) through 17 appearances. Both of his two professional goals have come against Providence.

Quick Hits: Jakub Skarek didn’t allow a goal until 17:11 of the second period on Tuesday, ending Bridgeport’s shutout streak at 97:42, dating back to the third period on Apr. 15th… It’s the longest shutout streak for the Sound Tigers this season… Dmytro Timashov has scored in back-to-back games and has four points (two goals, two assists) in his last four outings… Timashov, Arnaud Durandeau, Cole Bardreau and Otto Koivula are tied for the team lead with three multi-point performances… All five of the Sound Tigers’ wins this season have come when they don’t allow a power-play goal.

Sea Unicorns Join Futures League

NORWICH—The Norwich Sea Unicorns announced that the team will be joining the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the 2021 season. The Sea Unicorns will open their 2021 season on May 26 on the road when they travel to New Britain, Connecticut, to take on the New Britain Bees. Opening Night at Dodd Stadium will take place Monday, May 31 as the Sea Unicorns take on the Brockton Rox at 7 p.m. The full 2021 schedule will be available on goseaunicorns.com Wednesday.

Bolduc Bolsters Bridgeport: Samuel Bolduc continues to turn heads in his first professional season. The 20-year-old rookie recorded his first career multi-goal game on Tuesday with a pair of tallies against Providence, including his first game-winner in the opening four minutes of the contest. In addition, Bolduc’s career-best plus-3 rating on Tuesday was the best rating for any Sound Tigers’ player this season (fellow defenseman Grant Hutton also had a plus-3 rating on Tuesday). Bolduc leads the Sound Tigers in points (12) and shots (43) and is tied for the team lead in assists (six) and games played (19). He is one of six players to appear in every game for Bridgeport this season.

Picking Up the Pace: Arnaud Durandeau had just one assist in his first six games of the season, but the 22-year-old winger posted his second straight two-point effort on Tuesday and now has multiple points in three of his last four outings. Durandeau leads the Sound Tigers in points-per-game (0.70) and has six points (two goals, four assists) in his last four. He’s tied for fifth on the team in scoring (seven points in 10 games) and has 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 31 AHL contests with Bridgeport over the last two seasons.

High Five: Kyle MacLean is on a career-best five-game point streak (one goal, four assists), which is the longest for any Bridgeport player this season. He also has one assist in each of his last four games, the longest assist streak for the team this year. MacLean is tied for fifth on the club in points (seven) and tied for sixth in assists (five) through 17 appearances. Both of his two professional goals have come against Providence.

Quick Hits: Jakub Skarek didn’t allow a goal until 17:11 of the second period on Tuesday, ending Bridgeport’s shutout streak at 97:42, dating back to the third period on Apr. 15th… It’s the longest shutout streak for the Sound Tigers this season… Dmytro Timashov has scored in back-to-back games and has four points (two goals, two assists) in his last four outings… Timashov, Arnaud Durandeau, Cole Bardreau and Otto Koivula are tied for the team lead with three multi-point performances… All five of the Sound Tigers’ wins this season have come when they don’t allow a power-play goal.
