BRIDGEPORT– Jonathan
Galvez drove in four runs to lead the Bridgeport Bluefish to a 9-2 victory over
the Lancaster Barnstormers before 2,640 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on
Wednesday night.
Lancaster took a 1-0 lead against Bridgeport
starter Tyler Badmao just three batters into the contest. Darian Sandford
opened the game by reaching first on an error by Bluefish second baseman Tony
Abreu. After stealing second base—his league-leading 33rd theft of the season—the
Barnstormers’ centerfielder was driven home on a double Caleb Gindl.
The Bluefish responded with four
runs in the home half of the first. Luis Hernandez got things going with a
leadoff single, then came home on a two-run poke over the left field wall by D’Arby
Myers, giving the ’Fish a 2-1 lead. Bridgeport added a pair of runs two outs on
an RBI double by Abreu and an RBI single by Jonathan Galvez.
In the bottom of the third, the
Bluefish increased their advantage to 7-1 when Sean Burroughs delivered an
opposite-field RBI single by Sean Burroughs followed by a two-run inside-the-park
home run off the bat of Galvez—his team-leading eighth round-tripper of the
season.
Bridgeport tacked on a pair of
insurance runs on RBI singles by Myers in the fourth and Galvez in the fifth,
completing a string of nine unanswered runs. For the evening, the ‘Fish
finished with 14 hits, including seven for extra bases (three doubles, two
triples, and two home runs). It was the 21stt time in 53 games Bridgeport has
had 10 or more hits in a game. Myers and Galvez led the Bluefish hit parade
with three each.
With the
win, the Bluefish improve to 30-23, and are now 2.5 games behind the Somerset
Patriots in the Liberty Division first-half race. Lancaster fell to 28-24,
1 game off the Freedom Division pace set by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
Badamo earned the victory for Bridgeport, picking up his second win of the
season. He allowed just one unearned run on five hits in six innings, striking
out five batters. It was Badamo’s fifth quality start of the season. Lancaster
starter Brad Bergesen suffered the loss—his third of the season vs. two
victories. Bergesen gave up nine runs on 13 hits in five innings, striking out
five, but surrendering to home runs.
The two division rivals will wrap up
their three-game set Thursday night at at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. It
will be another Thirsty Thursday, where all fans 21 and over can take advantage
