BRIDGEPORT—The Bridgeport Sound Tigers scored twice on the power play and carried a one-goal lead into the third period, but ultimately let their late advantage slip away and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Syracuse Crunch before an announced crowd of 3,888 at the Webster Bank Arena on Sunday.

After a scoreless first period, the Sound Tigers broke the ice midway through the middle frame. Following a delay of game penalty against blueliner Reid McNeill, Travis St. Denis won a faceoff in the left circle and scored his 11th goal of the season all in the same motion—swatting at the puck and it past the glove of Syracuse netminder Eddie Pasquale at 12:21.

The Crunch, however, evened the score less than three minutes later. After center Mitchell Stephens won a faceoff in the left circle, he fed a pass back to defenseman Dominik Masin at the point. Masin immediately fired a slap shot that beat Bridgeport goalie Christopher Gibson’s glove to knot the score, 1-1, at the 14:55 mark of the second stanza.

Just over two minutes later, the Sound Tigers regained the lead with their second score with their second power play tally. After Masin was sent to the box for cross-checking, Kyle Burroughs sent a wrist shot from above the circle that was deflected by Steve Bernier in front of the net. The redirected puck ended up with second-year left wing Michael Dal Colle who found the back of the net to give the Sound Tigers a 2-1 advantage at the 16:52 mark.

But Syracuse ultimately would not be denied. The resilient Crunch registered the contests’ only two third-period tallies. After Stephens took a pass from Alexander Volkov and lifted a wrister over Gibson’s left shoulder, left wing Dennis Yan delivered the winner on a backhanded wraparound off a pass from Erik Cernack from behind the net with just under 12 minutes left in the contest. Masin also picked up a helper on Yan’s ninth goal of the campaign.

Yan put Syracuse on top for good at the 8:01 mark when he received the puck from Erik Cernak, curled behind the net, and converted on a backhanded wraparound for his ninth goal of the year. Cernak and Masin logged the assists.

The Sound Tigers finished 2-for-6 with a man advantage, and killed off all four power play opportunities by the Crunch. Bridgeport also outshot Syracuse, 29-26, for the game, although the Crunch dominated play in the third period with a 12-8 shots-on-goal advantage in the final frame.
