STORRS—The long-awaited announcement came this
afternoon when it was learned that the University of Connecticut has extended
its women’s basketball contract with Notre Dame beginning next season. The final
game between the Huskies and the Irish under the existing contract will be
played on Dec. 8 at Gampel Pavilion.
The rivalry—arguably the greatest in the women’s
college basketball history—dates back to when both schools competed in the Big East Conference—where
the Huskies will return next season. Connecticut is in its final season as a
member of the American Athletic Conference, while Notre Dame belongs to the
Atlantic Coast Conference.
The new contract will call for four games between the
arch-rivals that will last through the 2023-24 season. The Huskies will travel
to South Bend in the 2020-21 and 2022-23 campaigns, with the Irish coming to the Nutmeg State
in 2021-22 and 2023-24.
UConn is 37-13 all-time vs. Notre Dame. The teams split
their series last season with the Huskies defeating the Irish 89-71 on Dec. 2
and Notre Dame returning the favor in the Final Four, topping the Huskies 81-76
in the national semifinals. The Irish then fell to another Husky rival, Baylor,
82-81, in the national championship game. UConn will host the Bears this season
on Jan. 9 at the XL Center.
