Charles, Griner Lead USA Over Latvia at World Cup

By Frank Bonner
Britney Griner returned to the lineup and help the USA rout Latvia in
FIBA World Cup action.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS—Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner scored 15 points in her 2018 FIBA World Cup debut, helping lead Team USA to a 102-76 victory over Latvia at Quico Cabrera Arena in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands on Tuesday night. It was the second time in the 65-year history of the FIBA World Cup that the USA Basketball World Cup Team reached 100 points in group play.

The USA, which ended group play with a spotless 3-0 mark, has won 19 consecutive World Cup games and advances to the quarterfinals on Friday against the winner of the play-in game between Greece (1-2) and Nigeria (2-1). The game will be televised on one of ESPN’s channels to be determined, based on the USA’s quarterfinal game time.

Griner missed the first two World Cup games because of an ankle injury. Her efficient presence – she made six-of-eight shots in just 13:25 – was central to the USA’s effort to conserve energy as the team approaches single-elimination play. UConn legend and Seattle Storm superstar Sue Bird and Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics were rested.

The USA, which scored 100 points in its victory over China on Sunday, became the second team in World Cup history to reach 100 points twice in the group phase, joining the 1975 team from the Soviet Union. The USA has won its three games by an average of 19.3 points. But it remains a work in progress, and Griner’s return became an important step.

“BG just changes up all of the parts of the game for us and for the other team, obviously,” said another UConn legend, Diana Taurasi of Phoenix Mercury. “She does so much on both ends. She’s huge for us. We need her to be healthy,” added Taurasi, who scored 16 points.

It was the USA’s first game against Latvia in either Olympic or World Cup play. The only other outing between the two countries came in the 2008 Olympic warm-up tournament where the USA won 84-74.

USA and University of South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley said she rested Bird and Delle Donne, because she didn’t want to take a chance by playing them. Bird suffered a broken nose and Delle Donne bruised a knee during the WNBA playoffs.

Having both players healthy during the medal round games will be a major help for the USA. Yet another UConn superstar, Tina Charles, who was drafted No. 1 overall in the WNBA draft by the Connecticut Sun and currently plays for her hometown New York Liberty, led the USA with 18 points. She applauded her coach’s decision to rest her teammates.

“They [Delle Donne and Bird] have their injuries that they’re going through physically,” Charles said. “I think it’s really important that we have them for the duration of the tournament.”

Staley also got a chance to spread some playing time around in the process. The other 10 players on the roster spent 13 or more minutes on the court.

“We have a lot of great players in our league, especially some young players,” Staley said. “I count it as a blessing in disguise to give them this experience just in case because we don’t know what it’s going to look like in two years. Half of this team is getting experience that they’ve never had, which in the future, it helps USA Basketball out.”

Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm) and A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) scored 12 points. Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm) finished with 11, and Nneka Ogwumike (Los Angeles Sparks) had 10 points.

Monday had been a practice day for the USA, because there were no games to play. Staley said the practice day allowed for the coaching staff to make the players aware of certain things. One area that showed improvement following the practice was defense, an area that Staley mentioned was under construction after the win against China.

The USA gained separation by outscoring Latvia 26-8 in the third quarter, including a 17-0 run to close the period. Layshia Clarendon (Connecticut Sun) led the defense by coming up with four of the team’s nine steals.

“I thought our third quarter was by far the best quarter in which we exhibited a team that we want to become on the defensive side of the ball,” Staley said. “Hopefully that’s a prelude to what we will be in the quarterfinals.”

The USA was the only team in Group D that managed to outrebound Latvia. Latvia topped China and Senegal on the boards by a combined 16 rebounds. However, the USA outrebounded Latvia, 56-39.

Latvia has been eliminated from its first World Cup in history after going 0-3 in the group phase. Latvia lost its previous games against Senegal and China by a combined four points. Anete Steinberga scored a game-high 30 points against the USA.

The University of South Florida senior Kitija Laksa said there aren’t many words that can describe her experience of representing her country in the World Cup.

“It’s an amazing experience and we’re going to take all of it,” Laksa said. “Of course it’s sad, and it hurts that we lost the first two games in the last seconds but it’s a wonderful experience, and having the U.S. in our group is amazing.”

Islanders Top Rangers in Bridgeport

By Bob Phillips

The New York Islanders and New York Rangers squared off in Bridgeport
in a preseason game on Saturday. The Islanders skated off with a 5-2 win.
BRIDGEPORT—Whenever the New York Islanders play the New York Rangers, what transpires on the ice is the NHL version of the Civil War. Both teams play their home games within the borders of New York City—the Isles at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and Rangers at Madison Square Garden. In addition, both franchises locate their top minor league affiliates in the Nutmeg State—the Isles in Bridgeport (the Sound Tigers), and the Rangers in Hartford (the Wolf Pack). It was only logical, then, that the two teams would choose to hook up in Connecticut for a preseason game, and so it was that the Islanders stopped the Rangers, 5-2, at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Saturday night.

Four different Islanders—Anthony Beauvillier, Josh Baily, Anders Lee and Ryan Pulock found the back of the net, while Thomas Greiss played a strong game between the pipes, stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced. In addition, the 31-year-old German native, who was selected in the third round in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks, played all 60 minutes in net for the home team.

(The Islanders were designated as home team in this battle since the game was played in the Sound Tigers’ home arena.)

Beauvillier scored two goals, and Josh Bailey had a goal and two helpers, while Jordan Eberle, Mathew Barzal and Parker Wotherspoon each had two assists for the Islanders.

Cody McLeod gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead 6:41 into the first period. Beauvillier tied it 1-1 at 17:55.

Bailey made it 2-1 46 seconds into the second period, and Anders Lee increased the lead to 3-1 at 12:46, each on the power play. Beauvillier scored at 18:26 for a 3-1 lead, and Ryan Spooner's power-play goal at 19:59 brought the Rangers within 3-2.

Ryan Pulock made it 5-2 at 8:05 of the third period.

Thomas Greiss made 27 saves for the Islanders. Alexandar Georgiev started for the Rangers and made 17 saves on 20 shots. Dustin Tokarski relieved and made 10 saves on 12 shots.

The Islanders special teams had a solid evening, going 2-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. The archrivals will go at it again on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
