Bees, Brakettes To Square Off Again

NEW BRITAIN—The New Britain Bees, Connecticut’s sole representative in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, have announced that their rivalry with the Stratford Brakettes women’s fastpitch softball team will continue this season for the second consecutive year. This year’s ‘Battle of the Sexes’ will be held on Sunday, July 21st at New Britain Stadium. The game will be a nine-inning contest played under fast-pitch softball rules.

While unique, this is not the first time that there has been a Battle of the Sexes game between professional baseball and softball teams. The first time the Brakettes faced a professional baseball team in their organizations history was back in 2014. From 2014-17 the Brakettes played in a Battle of the Sexes against the late, great Bridgeport Bluefish, whom the Park City forsook in favor of a music amphitheater that was supposed to open this year, but has experienced construction delays and, frankly, may never happen.

This this year will mark the second Battle of the Sexes game against the New Britain Bees at New Britain Stadium. The Bees won the inaugural matchup last season by a score of 3-2. The first time a player from the Brakettes entered Connecticut to play a professional baseball team was back in the August of 1961 where Legendary Brakette pitcher Joan Joyce faced Hall of Fame Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams in a charity event in Waterbury, and struck him out.

“This is a fun, exciting and unique opportunity that offers something special for all fans in this region,” said Bees general manager Brad Smith. “The Bees are pleased to team up with the Brakettes again and look forward to another thrilling Battle of the Sexes game at New Britain Stadium.”

The Brakettes, who play their home games at Frank Deluca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, are the longest-running competitive fastpitch softball team in the United States, beginning  their 73rd consecutive season on June 1. They have won 28 National Amateur Softball Association Championships and seven Women's Major Sofball National Championships and have produced 22 National A.S.A. Hall of Famers and 13 Olympians. Since 2010 the Brakettes have a 489-26 overall record, which includes 25 invitational tournament titles and a national record 168 game winning streak. Manager John Stratton's club also had unbeaten seasons in 2011 (63-0) and 2013 (68-0). For additional information on the Brakettes, visit  www.brakettes.com.

This year’s ‘Battle of the Sexes’ will start at 7 p.m., with gates at New Britain Stadium opening at 6:00 p.m. Field Box tickets are $11, Box seats are $10, and Bleacher tickets are $8. There will also be special group and suite rental rates. Tickets are available by clicking HERE. Contact a Bees representative at 860-626-BEES or go to www.nbbees.com for more information.

The Atlantic League is widely recognized as the leading independent (i.e. unaffiliated) circuit in minor league baseball.  The Bees play their home games at New Britain Stadium. For information on tickets packages, group outings and sponsorships call 860-826-BEES (2337) or visit NBBees.com.

Christian Friedrich heads to New Britain for his 11th year of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. The former big leaguer last pitched in 2017 as a member of the San Diego Padres organization, splitting time between Triple-A El Paso, Double-A San Antonio, and Single-A Lake Elsinore.

The 31-year-old was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the first round (25th overall) of the 2008 MLB amateur draft. After five impressive seasons with the Rockies organization, he made his Major League debut with Colorado in 2012 at the age of 24. The lefthander would spend three campaigns in the big leagues with the Rockies, before heading over to the Padres in 2016, which would be his final season in The Show. The 27-year-old was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB amateur draft. Huskies Top Buffalo, Advance to Sweet 16

By Bob Phillips
Napheesa Collier (24) poured in 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead
the University of Connecticut Huskies to an 84-72 victory over Buffalo.

STORRS—Napheesa Collier came up big with a Double-Double (27 points, 16 boards) to lead the University of Connecticut Huskies to an 84-72 victory over Buffalo before 6,390 fans at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday. Katie Lou Samuelson and freshman Christyn Williams each added 17 points for the No. 2 seed Huskies (33-2).

Cierra Dillard, the nation's second leading scorer, had 29 points to lead Buffalo, which made a big run in the fourth quarter but could not overcome a 24-point second-half deficit. The Mid-American Conference champions finish the season 24-10

Indeed, Buffalo never led and trailed 73-49 with three minutes left in the third quarter. But the scrappy Bulls would not go away. They outscored the Huskies 12-2 to open the fourth, cutting the lead to 75-67. Their hopes of a comeback were dealt a major blow in the middle of that run when Dillard went down after rolling her right ankle in a collision with Collier. She had to be helped to the locker room, but came back into the game less than two minutes later, scoring five more points while clearly hobbled. Her layup with 1:11 to go made it 79-71, but UConn hit its foul shots at the end to close out the game.

Dillard, a transfer from UMass, finishes her college career with 2,205 points, including 1,422 in her two years at Buffalo, good enough for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list. She came into the game averaging more than 25 points and just under five rebounds and six assists. She had seven rebounds and seven assists on Sunday.

Collier came up two assists shy of a triple-double. The double-double was her fifth straight, 22nd this season and 46th of her career. She moved past Tina Charles into third place on UConn's scoring list.

So now UConn moves on to the Sweet 16 for the 26th consecutive year. But if one were to measure UConn’s success based on some reactions to the Buffalo game on social media by Husky Nation, one might reach the conclusion that UConn is doomed.

“I can’t wait for this wasted season to end,” one disgruntled fan posted on Facebook.

“UConn women look MESSY right now,” wrote one Twitter follower.

Guess Husky Nation isn’t happy unless the Huskies win by 30. But hey, that’s why they call it March Madness, right?

UConn now advances to the Sweet Sixteen in Albany and will take on the winner of Monday night's game between UCLA and Maryland.
