Cashman Scales Down Landmark Square for Sixth Straight Year

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s … Brian Cashman?

On Sunday, the New York Yankees general manager continued his yearly tradition of making like Spiderman and rappelling down the 22-story Landmark Square tower in downtown Stamford as part of the city’s “Heights & Lights” holiday festivities—a program that raises awareness for local businesses. Cashman’s appearance has become one of the event’s most popular draws, and if he has anything to say about it, will continue to be for years to come.

“This is fun,” said the Cashman prior to making a practice run on Friday. “I mean, how many times do you get the chance to jump off a 22-story building? I guess once a year for me, but it’s becoming a habit.”

Cashman was joined by FOX 5 sports anchor Duke Castiglione and FOX News Channel meteorologist Rick Reichmuth. In the past, former Mets manager Bobby Valentine—a Stamford native and former three-sport star at Rippowam High—has rappelled alongside Cashman.

After his feet returned to terra firma, Cashman headed off to National Harbor, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C., for baseball’s winter meetings, where he hopes to reinforce the Yankees relieving corps. Last year, with arguably the strongest back-end bullpen in the majors featuring Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, Cashman traded Miller (to the Indians) and Chapman (to the Cubs) at the trading deadline for a bevy of prospects.

Cashman, a Darien resident, has served as GM and SVP for the Yankees since 1998. During Cashman's tenure with the Yankees, the team has won seven American League pennants and five World Series championships.
