Make no mistake: Randy Edsall has his work cut out. But the winningest coach in Husky football history seems more than up for the task.

Edsall left Connecticut immediately after the Huskies were crushed by Oklahoma in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl and spent the next six years in the Atlantic Athletic Conference as head coach of Maryland. This year he returns to Storrs to assume the helm of a program that has, at times, struggled since upgrading to Football Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) in 2002.
And according to the American Athletic Conference media poll just released today, expectations for the 2017 season are somewhat muted: The Huskies have been picked to finish last in the Atlantic East Division.

The University of South Florida has been selected as the favorite to win the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship, and was the unanimous choice to win The American’s East Division title. The Bulls received 26 of a possible 30 votes to win the league title, while the Bulls were listed first on all 30 ballots in the East Division. Memphis was the media's choice in the West Division as the Tigers received 22 first-place votes and 169 points. Houston was projected as the conference champion on two ballots, while Memphis and Navy received one vote each as the projected conference champion.

USF, which finished the 2016 season ranked No. 19 nationally, returns 18 starters, including six all-conference players, from a team that went 11-2 and defeated South Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl last season. Head coach Charlie Strong, who served as Louisville’s head coach during the first season of American Athletic Conference football in 2013, returns to the conference as the Bulls’ fourth coach in school history. USF will be led by quarterback Quinton Flowers, the 2016 American Offensive Player of the Year who set a school record with 4,342 yards of total offense and accounted for 42 touchdowns last year.

But Husky fans, take heart. Only one time in the past four years has the preseason favorite gone on to win the conference title. That happened in 2014 when Cincinnati was tabbed by the media as preseason favorite and ended the season sharing the title with the University of Central Florida and Memphis.

The third American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be played Saturday, Dec. 2, at the home site of the division champion with the best conference record.

Flex Packs On Sale

UConn Football Flex Pack ticket packages are designed for fans unable to make every game at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field (and, this year at least, Fenway Park). Flex Packs, available in two- or three-game packages, offer a variety of pricing options and seating locations. All represent a reduced rate over single-game ticket prices. In addition, flex packs gives fans priority seating over individual game ticket buyers. Two-game flex packs start at $63, and three-game flex packs start at $83.

The season will kick off on Thursday night, Aug. 31 (a prelude to Labor Day weekend) with a game vs. New England rival Holy Cross. The Huskies
will host South Florida in the American Athletic Conference opener Sat., Sep. 9, and SEC opponent Missouri on Sat., Oct. 28. The 2017 schedule also includes a Friday night game (marketed as “Friday Night Lights”) when the Huskies play host to Memphis on Oct. 6.
