SAN ANTONIO – The Connecticut Sun won their third straight—and
their eighth in 10 games—cruising to an easy 89-56 victory over the San Antonio
Stars before 3,210 fans at the AT&T Center Wednesday night. Alyssa Thomas
led the Sun effort with a 13-point, eight rebound performance along with a
career-high seven steals. Courtney Williams led all scorers with 17 points (13
in the first half), and Jasmine Thomas reached 700 assists for her
career.
After San Antonio
took an early 9-8 lead with 4:38 remaining in the first period, the Sun took
control of the game, going on a 24-6 run and taking a 40-24 lead into the
locker room at intermission. Alyssa Thomas had seven points, six rebounds, five
assists, and five steals at the half.
San Antonio
scored the first basket of the second half before Connecticut blew the
game open with a 21-4 run that made it 61-30 with just over three minutes left
in the third quarter.
The rest of the
game was a mere formality.
Connecticut tied
its largest margin of victory this season—a 104-71 win over Atlanta on June
10—and it posted its sixth win on the road. Only Minnesota has more road wins
this season.
Jasmine Thomas
had 10 points and eight assists. She posted her 700th career assist during the
first half, and tied her single-season career high with her 35th made
three-pointer of the year. Jonquel Jones had eight points and eight rebounds in
limited action as coach Curt Miller went to the bench early and often.
Rachel Banham
came off the bench to score nine points for the Sun on three made threes, while
Lynetta Kizer (eight points, five rebounds) had her best outing in the four
games since returning from a back injury that forced her to miss five
contests. Rookie Brionna Jones added seven points while former Stars
forward Danielle Adams hit a pair of three-pointers.
Kayla McBride led
the Stars with 12 points. Former UConn standout Moriah Jefferson left the game
in the first half with a head contusion.
With the win, the
Sun improve to 9-7 and trail the first-place Washington Mystics by a half game.
The hapless Stars fall to 1-15. The Sun return home on Saturday to host Elena Delle Donne the Mystics
in a battle for first place which will also be “Hometown Heroes Night.” Tip-off
at the Mohegan Sun Arena will be at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on CSNNE
and will be streamed on League Pass.
