Bees Sweep Doubleheader in York

With two wins in York, PA on Mother's Day, the New Britain Bees nearly
doubled their wins total for the year, improving to 5-10 on the season. 

YORK, PA—Mother’s Day may have been a cloudy, dank day in these parts, but it was bright and sunny in York, Pa.—metaphor-ically speaking—for the New Britain Bees who swept a doubleheader from the York Revolution at People’s Bank Park. Indeed, the Bees, who had gotten off to a slow 3-10 start to the season, thanks primarily to a season-opening six-game slide in Sugar Land, Tex., nearly doubled their win total for the year in one day.

In the opener, trailing 2-1 in their final turn at bat in the top half of the seventh, New Britain got even against York starting pitcher Jay Gause when Deibinson Romero hit a leadoff homer that just cleared the Arch Nemesis in left field. It was Romero’s first round-tripper in a Bees uniform, knotting the score at 2-2. The score remained that way until Darren Ford cranked a dinger off losing pitcher Robert Carson (2-1) in the top of the 11th. It was also Ford’s first homer in a Hardware City jersey. The New Britain bullpen did the rest, as Kevin Chapman struck out the side for his second save of the season, making a winner out of Manny Delcarmen (2-1). Ford led the offensive attack for the Bees with a pair of hits.

New Britain starter Zach Stewart registered a no-decision, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Stewart walked four and struck out three while surrendering a home run and a wild pitch. York starter Jay Gause also did not get a decision, giving up two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings. Gause walked one, struck out four and surrendered on home run.

In game two, New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (2-1) absolutely dominated the Revolution bats en route to the complete game victory, firing five scoreless innings on just one hit allowed, walking one and striking out seven. The right-hander erased 15 of the 17 batters he faced in the contest. York starting pitcher Ross Detwiler (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (one earned run) on five hits in three and two-thirds innings pitched, walking one and striking out three while tossing a wild pitch.

The Bees sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning versus Detwiler, scoring five runs on four hits for a 5-0 lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Manny Ramirez, Jr. (his first hit in professional baseball), and a two-run double produced by Vinny Siena. That was all Simon needed, as he tallied the first shutout by the New Britain pitching staff on the season. Ramirez, Jr., Reid Brignac, and Jonathan Galvez each had two hits for the Bees. With the two wins, the Bees improve to 5-10, while the Revs fall to 8-7 with the two losses. The Bees return home on Tuesday when they open a six-game homestand with a three-game set vs. the Lancaster Barnstormers.
