Bobcats Bow To Harvard

Harvard’s Jack Drury (19) is stopped by Quinnipiac netminder
Andrew Shortridge. Drury would ultimately score the game-winning
goal—an empty-netter—in Harvard’s 2-1 victory.
HAMDEN—Despite a last minute goal by freshman right wing Ethan de Jong, the Harvard Crimson held on for a 2-1 victory over the No. 6/6 Quinnipiac Bobcats before 3,032 fans at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena at the People's United Center in ECAC Hockey action Saturday night.

John Marino put the Crimson on the board with 4:12 left in the first period with a power-play goal. Colton Kerfoot dumped the puck off for Marino who found Fox at the right point. Fox immediately passed it back to Marino on top of the left faceoff circle for the one-timer.

The game stayed that way throughout a scoreless second period until the 17:42 mark of the third period when Jack Drury scored an empty-netter—his fifth goal of the season—to give Harvard a 2-0 lead with 2:18 remaining in regulation, but Quinnipiac refused to surrender, and continued to keep netminder
Andrew Shortridge on the bench for the extra skater.

The Bobcats spoiled Lackey's shutout bid when Brandon Fortunato stole the puck in the offensive zone and hit Wyatt Bongiovanni down in the left corner with a pass. Bongiovanni attempted a wraparound shot but de Jong was there to put home the rebound.

The Bobcats nearly doubled the Crimson's shot output, 47-27, but could not break through as Harvard goaltender Michael Lackey made a career-high 46 saves—including 33 saves over the final two periods.

Shortridge was just as stellar between the pipes for Quinnipiac. The Anchorage, AK, native turned aside 25 shots to hold down the defensive end, but the Bobcats came up just short.

The Bobcats now have a week off before traveling to Boston where they will challenge Hockey East rival Boston University on Saturday. Faceoff at Agganis Arena is at 7 p.m. The Bobcats’ next home game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 22, vs. Holy Cross. First puck drops at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena at the People's United Center at 7 p.m.
