No. 23 Huskies Drop Late-Season Game To URI

UConn made a valiant effort on the road on Tuesday, but ultimately
dropped a 4-3 decision to URI.
KINGSTON, R.I.–The No. 23 University of Connecticut baseball team made a strong effort, but a late comeback by URI ultimately resulted in a 4-3 victory for the home team.

UConn starting pitcher Colby Dunlop was terrific on the hill for the Huskies. Recording a career-high six innings that featured just one walk and three strikeouts. Dunlop was in line for the win after the Huskies put together a three-run, five-hit seventh inning with the team down, 2-0.

Mike Woodworth avoided a tag along the first base line to reach with a bunt single to begin the frame. Chris Winkel followed with a double off the fence in center, nearly tying the game with a home run.

Christian Fedko, as he has the past, came through with a big knock, a two-run single over an outstretch glove of a leaping second baseman. UConn took its first lead of the day on an Anthony Prato sac fly to center.

With the services of Jacob Wallace and P.J. Poulin unavailable due to heavy workload on Sunday the Huskies had to go to other options out of the pen.

Trevor Holmes pitched a scoreless seventh inning with Chris Winkel providing a great defensive play. The Rams had runners at the corners with just one out when Winkle backhanded a groundball, fired to second and retreated to the first base bag to receive the throw from Prato. The double play kept the Huskies in front heading to the eighth.

The Rams hit a pair of solo home runs against Dan Rajkowski to take the lead for good in the eighth, 4-3.

UConn returns to the diamond on Thursday at 1 p.m. against No. 9 ECU Pirates to close out the regular season at J.O. Christian Field.
