Friars Top Marquette in OT Thriller

A.J. Reeves (3) was one of five Friars who scored in double digits
in Providence’s OT win over Marquette on Tuesday.

MILWAUKEE—The Friar train keeps on rolling. Providence College upset the Marquette Golden Eagles in overtime, 81-80, before 14,414 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on Tuesday night. It was The Friars’ fourth straight victory after a sluggish 6-5 start to the season, and their first-ever win at Fiserv Forum. 
 
Five Friars scored in double-double digits. Maliek White  led the way with 19 points and four assists. Nate Watson popped in 13 points with five boards and two steals. Homeboy David Duke and Alpha Diallo contributed 12 points apiece. Duke added five assists and two rebounds, while Diallo hauled down 11 boards and blocked three shots for his seventh double-double of the season. A.J. Reeves rounded out the quintet with 10 points, three boards and three steals.
 
The Friars started the first five minutes absolutely en fuegoCenter Kalif Young scored the opening basket of the game on a jump shot followed quickly by a Duke basket. Emmitt Holt  scored the first three of the night from the far corner. The Friars led 7-4 going into the first media timeout.
 
White was able to knock down a second chance three-point goal from the corner with 9:40 on the clock. Providence increased their lead to nine with the score at 17-8. Marquette's Markus Howard made his first three of the night to bring the Golden Eagles within three. Not long after the Friars found control again going on a 6-0 run. The score was 25-16 with a little under four minutes to play in the first half. Both teams finished strong trading baskets to play out the final minutes of the half.
 
The teams headed into halftime with a 32-27 Providence lead. Providence shot 11-26 (42.3 percent) from the field, 3-9 (33.3 percent) from three and 7-10 (70.0 percent) from the free throw line. Marquette shot 11-34 (32.4 percent) from the field, 3-13 (23.1 percent) from three, and 2-5 (40.0 percent) from the free throw line. The Friars scored 12 points off the fast break compared to Marquette's three.
 
Marquette started the second half with a spark. Markus Howard scored the opening eight points on two made three pointers and a layup. With 16:15 on the clock, the Golden Eagles got their first lead of the game on a jump shot. On the following play, they scored another basket from behind the arc to give them the lead, 40-35.
 
Holt ended Marquette's 11-0 run on a layup in the paint. Watson contributed with a hook shot on the next possession to bring the Friars within four and continued to score two more field goals down low. Marquette led 49-46 with 10:53 left on the clock.
 
Diallo made a tough play in the paint to put the Friars back on top. His offensive board and putback made the score 50-49. Both teams traded taking the lead in the following possessions.  The Friars then regained a three-point lead on a Reeves slam down the lane from White.
 
With 2:22 minutes left in regulation Marquette took a timeout. The contest was all tied up at 63. With 18 seconds on the clock, the Friars were down by three points and had the ball. Reeves drained a three from Duke to tie the game at 67 all. The Golden Eagles had four seconds on the clock to score and did not convert sending the game into overtime.
 
Reeves kept his streak going scoring the opening layup of overtime to give the Friars an early lead. With just under three minutes on the clock, White found Duke up ahead to gain a three-point lead. The score was 73-70. The Golden Eagles answer on the other end with a three-pointer to tie the game up yet again. With 1:19 left in overtime, Reeves struck again with a basket from downtown. With the score all tied up at 78, Young got the putback basket to give the Friars the advantage once again. He finished with nine points and three rebounds. Providence held on in the remaining 30 seconds to snag the win from Marquette.
 
Providence finished 27-59 (45.8 percent) from the field, 5-15 (33.3 percent) from three and 22-36 (61.1 percent) from the free throw line. Marquette shot 27-73 (37.0 percent) from the field, 11-29 (37.9 percent) from three, and 15-23 (65.2 percent) from the free throw line. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles with 39 points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Friars, who dropped both games to Marquette last year by an average margin of 14.5 points, improved to10-6 on the season and 3-0 in Big East play for the first time since the 2008-2009 season.

“We’re a lot more dialed in,” Young told Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal after the game. “There’s a sense of urgency understanding where we’re at. We know we have to step up and make a better effort and right now anybody can step up. Everyone has a chance to show up and play big for us.”

Things don’t get easier for the Friars, nor will they as Big East play kicks in. The Friars are back home to host the No. 6 Butler Bulldogs (14-1 overall, 2-0 Big East) on Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
