Jones Sets Single-Season Rebound Record in Sun’s 81-70 Loss in LA

Jonquel Jones (35) applies defensive pressure on LA’s Nneka
Ogqumike. Jones grabbed 10 boards and broke the WNBA single-
season rebound record with 403.

LOS ANGELES–Jonquel Jones set a new WNBA single-season rebound record while also collecting her 20th double-double of the season, but it didn’t prove to be enough as Nneka Ogqumike (21 points) and Candice Parker (12 points, 14 rebounds) led the Los Angeles Sparks to an 81-70 victory before 12,236 fans at the Staples Center on Sunday. It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

Odyssey Sims (16 points), Jantel Lavender (11) and Chelsea Gray (10) also scored in double digits for the Sparks, who led in this one from start to finish.

Courtney Williams led the Sun with 19 points, while Jones and Jasmine scored 10 points each for the Sun, while Alyssa Thomas and Morgan Tuck each added nine points. It was the best scoring performance by Tuck, the former UConn star, since returning from a knee contusion on July 12.

With 8:50 remaining in the third quarter, JJ pulled down her sixth rebound of the game, surpassing the WNBA single-season record set by Tina Charles in 2010 when she was a rooking with the Sun. Jones ended the regular season with 403 rebounds for the record.

Los Angeles ended the season with the league’s second-best record, and earned a postseason bye into the semifinals. The Sun, who dropped three of their last four regular-season games, nonetheless finished with a 21-13 record which wrapped up the No. 4 seed, giving them a first-round bye. They will host a second-round playoff game at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. Their opponent will be determined by first-round games played on Sept. 6 and 7.
