STORRS—The UConn
Huskies women’s basketball team finds itself in a familiar situation, as an
invitee to participate in the NCAA Tournament. It also finds itself in a
somewhat unfamiliar spot—that is not a No. 1 seed.
The Huskies, who finished
the regular season as American Athletic Conference regular season and
tournament champions, with an overall 31-2 record, were seeded No. 2 in the
Albany Region the NCAA announced on Monday. This will be the first time the
Huskies have been seeded No. 2 since 2006, and the fifth time in program
history.
The Huskies will face No. 15-seeded Towson (20-12) in the first round
on Friday. Tip-off will be at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion, and
the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The UConn-Towson at
approximately 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The game will follow another first round game
between No. 7 Rutgers (22-9) and No. 10 Buffalo (23-9), also at Gampel, which
will begin at 4:30. Winners will advance to Round 2 on Sunday, again at Gampel.
Sunday’s game time is TBD and will be announced following Friday’s first-round
games.
The winner of the Sunday’s second-round game will advance to the
NCAA Regional Semifinal, which will be played at Times Union Center in Albany
on Friday, March 29.
The Huskies own the sport's all-time winningest record in NCAA
Tournament play at 117-19 (.863), and will be making their 30th consecutive
appearance in the Tournament. UConn has advanced to the regional semifinals in
each of the last 24 seasons.
