2020 season, the schedule has been expanded to 36 games (vs. 34), including 18 on the road and 18 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Another new component of the 2020 schedule is the
Commissioner’s Cup. This new event will consist of designating a portion of
regular-season games – 10 per team – as counting toward Cup play. Cup games
will be the first home game and first road game each team plays against its
five conference rivals, all completed from May 15 – July 10 before the WNBA
takes a month-long break while many WNBA players participate in the 2020 Summer
Olympics in Japan. The Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game is tentatively
scheduled to be played on Friday, Aug. 14, two days before regular-season play
resumes on Sunday, Aug. 16 following the Olympic break.
After advancing to the 2019 WNBA Finals, the Sun open the
2020 campaign with a home game against New York on Saturday, May 16 at 7
p.m. in the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Liberty will have the first
overall pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft.
Connecticut will have two additional home
games in May. On Tuesday, May 19, the Sun will
host the Chicago Sky and on Sunday, May 24,
Candace Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks visit Mohegan Sun
Arena. Both contests tip-off at 7 p.m.. The Sparks will be looking for
redemption after being swept by the Sun in the 2019 WNBA
Semifinals. The Sun’s May line-up also includes visits to New
York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Phoenix.
During the month of June, Connecticut will host four
games in Uncasville. The Sun welcomes New York for the second
time of the young season, as well as
hosting the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream. Breanna
Stewart and Sue Bird also return to Connecticut with the
Storm on Friday, June 5 for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
Connecticut will also face Chicago and Dallas on the
road on June 3 and June 9, respectively. The Sun ends the
month with a stretch of three road trips; first visiting
Atlanta on June 21, Chicago on June 24 and
ending it with a stop in Washington, DC, to face the
Mystics on June 28. This will be the first contest between the two
2019 WNBA Finals contenders since October 10. Tip-off is set
for 3 p.m. at the Entertainment and Sports Arena and will be
broadcast on ESPN2.
In July, the Sun competes in four games before the
2020 Olympic break. On July 5, Connecticut hosts the Mystics at
3 p.m. On July 8, the team hosts Atlanta at 11:30 a.m. for
its 3rd Annual Camp Day. Connecticut has two road games in July, including July
2 in New York and July 10 in Indiana. The Sun’s game on
July 2 at New York is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
Upon return from the Olympics, where the United States
Women’s National Team will be in pursuit of its 7th consecutive
Gold Medal, the Sun will resume the season on Aug. 16against the
Minnesota Lynx. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Mohegan
Sun Arena and will be televised on ESPN.
Connecticut will also welcome Chicago,
Los Angeles, the Las
Vegas Aces and Phoenix throughout August. Diana Taurasi
and the Mercury visit Mohegan Sun on Thursday, Aug.
27 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
September will be a busy month for the Sun, as they
see action in 10 contests, half of which are a part of
a five-game road trip in an eight-day span. Connecticut opens the month with
a home game against Dallas on Tuesday, Sept. 1 before starting
the hefty road trip. The first leg of the trip will be in Minnesota on
Sept. 4 and Dallas on Sept.
6. The Sun then have back-to-back games against Las
Vegas and Phoenix on Sept. 8and 9. They close out the stretch on
Sept. 11 in Seattle.
Connecticut makes its way home for a three-game
home stand on Sept. 13,
Sept. 16 and Sept. 18 vs. the Lynx, Aces and
Fever, respectively. The Sun concludes the regular season on the road vs. the
Mystics on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. on ABC.
