Bees Fall in Extras to Navigators

NEW BRITAIN—The New Britain Bees gave it a valiant effort, but ultimately came up short, dropping a 6-4 decision to the North Shore Navigators before 573 fans at New Britain Stadium in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action on Sunday afternoon.

The Navigators—not to be confused with the late, great Norwich Navigators, an Eastern League team that played at Dodd Stadium from 1994 until 2005 (after which the team became known as the Defenders), were quick to get runs on the board when University of Main standout Sean Lawlor knocked in the first run of the game to give the Navs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Bees quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the opening frame compliments of a two-run dinger by University of New Haven star Andrew Cain, staking the Bees to a 2-1. The score held until the bottom of the sixth when Farleigh Dickinson’s Tony Socci drove in two runs for the Bees with a single to right field, giving the home team a 4-1 cushion.

New Britain was strong on the mound for seven innings, but the Navigators—who hail from Lynn, Mass.—broke up the party with a three-run homer to left field off the bat of Alex Brickman (University of Dayton) in the top of the eighth, knotting the score at 4-4. That’s how it remained for the rest of regulation.

Then, in the first inning of extra play, the Navs regained the lead when Sean Lawlor smacked a double into right field, followed by an intentional walk to Alex Brickman. Both eventually came home thanks to a couple of miscues by the Bees—namely a wild pitch and passed ball.

New Britain’s starting pitcher, Drew Mead (Marymount University), only made it through three innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out three batters. Tim Blaisdell (University of Hartford), Tommy Hughes (Southern Connecticut State University), Ben Talbot (Holy Cross), and Kyle Menaker (University of Albany) all saw action in the contest, with Menaker getting tagged with the loss after giving up two runs in the top of the tenth inning.

The Navigators used a total of nine pitchers in the contest, with Robert Nadel (La Salle University) picking up the win after retiring the side in order in the ninth inning. Beau Dana (Dickinson College) had some trouble in the tenth inning but was able to strand the two runners on base and collect his first save of the season.

The Bees are back in action Tuesday night against the Westfield Starfires for the final game of a three game homestand to open the season. Westfield is looking for a fresh start after finishing last season at 15-41, the worst record in the FCBL last season. First pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Tickets are available at the New Britain Stadium box office or by clicking HERE.
