Report: Former Hartford Colonial Josh McCown ‘Un-Retires’

NFL Network is reporting that former Hartford Colonials QB Josh
McCown has been signed by the Philadelphia Eagles.
PHILADELPHIA—Josh McCown, the veteran quarterback who last played with the Philadelphia Eagles, was thought to have hung up his cleats at the conclusion of last season.

Not so fast.

McCown, best known in these parts for his one season piloting the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League (UFL) in 2010, was all set to join ESPN this season, but NFL Network is now reporting that the 40-year-old journeyman will return to Philly and give it one more try with the Iggles. Assuming this comes to pass, this will be McCown’s 17th season in the NFL, and his 18th overall in pro football. According to the report, McCown will earn a base salary of $2 million—fully guaranteed. If the report is correct, that makes it a reasonable assumption that McCown will be on Philadelphia’s roster this season.

The Eagles have been particularly vulnerable to QB injuries. Starter Carson Wentz, again, has been beset by injuries, and backups Cody Kessler (concussion) and Nate Sudfeld (broken wrist) alson have been hurt, so Philadelphia went to the well and signed McCown as an insurance policy.

McCown has spent time with 10 NFL teams along with his pit-stop in Hartford. He has started 76 regular season games, and though his team has only won 23 of those, he has a reputation as being one of the best backups in the league. Indeed, while embracing the “journeyman” tag, label, McCown has started 43 games over the past six seasons for the Bears, Bucs, Browns and Jets.
