Late Dallas Rally Sinks Sun

Jonquel Jones had 10 points for the Sun, who dropped a close decision
to Dallas on Tuesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
UNCASVILLE—A 30-point second quarter and a game-high 19 points from rookie Arike Ogunbowale helped the Dallas Wings overcome an early deficit and top the Connecticut Sun 71-67 Tuesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Wings defense also held strong in the closing seconds of the game to seal the victory, keeping a late Sun rally at bay.

Glory Johnson busted the game open with a three-pointer from the far corner in front of the Wings bench, setting the tone from the get-go for Dallas. The Wings and Sun would go back-and-forward for the first few minutes, but Connecticut would go up by as many at 10 points near the close of the opening quarter. An Ogunbowle three-pointer at the first quarter buzzer would ignite an 10-2 run that ran into the second quarter.

The Sun wouldn’t go without a fight, taking a one-point advantage with three minutes left in the first half. The Wings would head to the locker room up 44-35 on the heels of another run, this time it being 12-3. Connecticut would mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, taking the lead 66-65 with 2:21 remaining, but defensive stops by Dallas—including a late block by Megan Gustafson—and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch would give the Wings their first win of the preseason.

Kennedy Burke added 13 points for the Wings, while Kaela Davis (11) and Johnson (10) also scored in double digits for the visitors. Bria Holmes led the Connecticut offense with 14 points, while Jonquel Jones and Brionna Jones added 10 points each for the Sun.

The Sun have one more preseason game on Sunday vs. the New York Liberty at the Times Union Center in Albany (2:30 p.m. tip) before opening the season at home on Saturday, May 25, against the Washington Mystics. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. ET, and tickets are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office or by clicking HERE. If you can’t make the game, it will be streamed live on Twitter.
