Bulldogs Return to Yale Bowl Saturday vs. Penn

After a two-game road swing, Yale returns home to take on
Ivy League rival Penn.
NEW HAVENComing off an improbable comeback victory at Richmond, 28-27, last weekend, the Bulldogs return home to the Yale Bowl and Ivy League football play on Saturday, with kickoff slated for noon. Yale finishes a perfect 3-0 in non-conference play for the second time in three seasons under head coach Tony Reno and looks to make it three-straight wins over the Quakers in the same span.

The Series
Saturday's match-up is the 88th all-time meeting between the schools. Yale leads the series 49-36-1 (one Penn victory was vacated due to sanction). The Bulldogs have won the past two matchups, including a 24-19 victory at the Yale Bowl in the Elis' Ivy League title season in 2017 and a 23-10 victory at Penn last season.

Receiving Recognition
For the 10th straight week, Yale continues to receive votes in both the STATS FCS Top-25 poll. The Bulldogs started with votes in the preseason poll and now have 43 votes in STATS's rankings along with Ivy counterparts Princeton (No. 13, 1780) and Dartmouth (No. 17, 1188).

Ivy Accolades
After the win at Richmond, senior quarterback Kurt Rawlings  was honored as the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, his second Ivy award in three weeks. Rawlings threw for all four Yale touchdowns and threw the game-tying score with just nine seconds left to take their first lead of the game. His final touchdown pass tied him for first all-time at Yale with Alvin Cowan '04 for the most touchdown passes with 41.

Bulldog Breakdown
The Bulldogs are back on the winning track and did so in comeback fashion after suffering its first loss of the season in Week Four. Yale traveled to Richmond last Saturday night and erased a 27-14 deficit in the final 90 seconds at Richmond to complete an improbable comeback victory, 28-27.

Richmond, which was coming off a win over then-No. 18 Maine, scored the first 13 points of the game, led 20-7 at the half and 27-7 four minutes into the third quarter. Trailing by two touchdowns with under two minutes left, Rawlings orchestrated the first score to senior captain JP Shohfi with 1:23 left to play. Shohfi then doubled down, coming up with needed onside kick recovery. Rawlings then did it again, finding senior wide receiver Reed Klubnik with just nine seconds left to tie the game. Senior kicker Sam Tuckerman took care of the rest, drilling home the extra point to win the game.

The Bulldog offense leads the Ivy League and ranks third nationally in time of possession as they have held the ball for 34:56 minutes per game.

The defense has also stepped up, as it is second among Ivy's and 24th in country with 7.4 tackles for loss per game. Additionally, the unit has posted top-10 national rankings of fifth in fourth-down conversion defense (.250), eighth in third-down conversion defense (.288) and ninth in defensive touchdowns (two).

Scouting Penn
The Quakers (2-3, 1-1 Ivy) are coming off a 44-6 loss at Columbia on homecoming last Saturday. Penn did not score until a fumble recovery by the defense with less than six minutes to play in regulation.

Outside of the road loss last week, Penn boasts a 38-24 home win over Sacred Heart and a road victory at Lafayette, 27-24. They were also edged in their season-opener at then-No. 20 Delaware, 28-27, and gave Dartmouth a strong challenge in a loss, 28-15.

Running back Karekin Brooks leads the Ivy League with 689 rushing yards on 119 attempts with seven scores on the ground. He averages a league-best 137.8 yards per game. Quarterback Nick Robinson paces the Ivy League with only one interception thrown with seven scores. Additionally, wide receiver Ryan Cragun paces the league with 99.0 yards per game with 396 in just four contests played.

On defense, Zach Evans leads the conference with 44 total tackles, 10 more than any other player, and averages two more tackles per game than anyone else. Brian O'Neill is second in tackles for loss with 7.5 this year.
