NEW HAVEN—On a
day that featured 1,072 of combined offense, the Yale Bulldogs were able to
outscore Penn, 46-41, at the Yale Bowl on Saturday. Senior quarterback Kurt
Rawlings threw for a career-high 388 yards and now stands No. 1 all-time at
Yale with 42 career touchdown passes and 6,681 yards of total offense. Indeed, Yale (5-1, 2-1 Ivy) and Penn
(2-4, 0-3 Ivy) traded scores all afternoon as 13 touchdowns were scored and not
a single field goal was attempted.
The Bulldogs led 20-13 at halftime, but Penn rallied with two third-quarter scores to take a 27-26 lead with just 47 seconds remaining in the period. Rawlings was able to orchestrate a scoring drive on the next
possession and after an interception by sophomore safety Kyle Ellis, junior
running back Zane Dudek went in for one of his three rushing scores to take a
39-27 lead. Dudek scored twice in the fourth quarter, putting another one in
with two minutes to go.
Penn got close late with a
touchdown with under a minute to go but senior wide receiver Reed Klubnik came
down with onside kick attempt to ice the game.
“I'm proud of our guys for
finding a way to win. They kept pushing the entire game and came away with an
Ivy victory which are always tough,” said head coach Tony Reno. “Our offense
paced us all game long, led by offensive line. The whole unit got the game ball
and allowed us to score the points we needed to get the win.”
The line play of seniors Sterling
Strother, Dieter Eiselen, Steve Cepalia, junior Cameron Warfield and sophomore
Nick Gargiulo led to some impressive offensive numbers as the Yale offense went
for 551 yards.
Rawlings completed 23-of-31
passes and two touchdowns, and also added added 68 yards on the ground and two
scores including a 37-yard touchdown run. He was joined by Dudek who went for
97 yards on the ground on 22 carries.
Senior captain JP Shohfi caught a
team-high 11 balls and went for 162 yards. Klubnik pulled down nine catches and
187 yards and two touchdowns. He is now tied for third all-time at Yale with 17
career touchdowns.
Ellis paced the defense with 10
tackles, five solo and one coming for loss in addition to his clutch
interception in Quaker territory.
The Bulldogs are back in action
at the Yale Bowl next Saturday, Nov. 2, when they take on Columbia in Ivy League
action. Kickoff is noon. The game will be streamed on ESPN+
and broadcast on WELI
960 AM.
