Two Stags Named All-New England

Jack Gaithings (left) and Austin Pope have been named All New England
Second Team by the All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association.

FAIRFIELD—Fairfield University senior shortstop Jack Gethings and junior right-hander Austin Pope  have been named to the All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Second Team for their outstanding performances during the 2019 season. Both student-athletes were honored by the MAAC after the regular season and receive their first yearly honor by the NEIBA.

Gethings concluded one of the best offensive seasons in school history, which earned him the distinction of being the first-ever Stag to be named the MAAC Player of the Year. He set the single season program record with 88 hits, tied the standard with seven triples, and was among the nation's best in batting average, finishing with a .364 clip. Gethings also broke the program record for career hits and was a unanimous selection for the All-MAAC First Team. Gethings finished his Fairfield career as the program leader in: games played, hits, runs scored, and triples.

Pope earned his first yearly award from the MAAC, being named to the All-MAAC Second Team following his junior campaign. Pope was among the hardest pitchers to hit in the MAAC, finishing with a .201 batting average against and finished second on the team with 79 strikeouts in 77.0 innings. His longest outing came in the MAAC Championship opener as he tossed a career-high eight innings in the victory over Monmouth. For the year, he maintained a 4-3 record with a 3.16 ERA.

The duo helped the Stags to a MAAC Championship Series appearance and a program-record 35 victories in 2019, including the school's first win over a nationally ranked team when they defeated No. 22 UConn.

"It's a great honor to be included with New England's best college players," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "There is not a better amateur baseball game in the Northeast to showcase the terrific talent we have in our region. We are excited for Jack and Austin to be a part of it,"

With their selections, Gethings and Pope will be invited to play in the 45th annual NEIBA All-Star game which will take place on Friday, May 31 at the Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford, Conn., at noon.
